The British sovereign is a gold bullion coin of the United Kingdom that is composed of 22 carat gold with a denomination of one pound. British sovereign gold coins have a long history starting with their name, which is a reference to the English gold sovereign last minted in 1604. British sovereigns were minted beginning in 1817, and the weight and purity have remained constant into modern times.

The coin act of 1816 set the requirements for gold content, and these have stayed fixed at 0.235420 troy ounces since then. The Royal Mint is the main mint that produces sovereigns but Australia, India, Canada, and South Africa have also historically minted them as well.

The designs of sovereigns have changed throughout the years, but the most common design features Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse (designed by Ian Rank-Broadly). On the reverse is a heroic image of Saint George slaying a dragon by artist Benedetto Pistrucci.

Sovereigns are very difficult to accurately counterfeit because of their smaller size, and counterfeits are extremely rare compared to the amount of real sovereigns in circulation. In the rare chance a counterfeit coin comes around, they are easily detectable by dealers due to the unique properties of gold. Sovereigns enjoy a familiarity among collectors and investors and are a great choice if you are looking for smaller gold coins uncer one ounce.
